Is Ping Pong an Olympic Sport?
At the Olympics you will only ever hear it called table tennis, which is the official name used by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The game itself is the same one played in basements and rec rooms; if you are curious about the naming, see our guide to ping pong vs table tennis.
Below you will find how the sport got into the Games, every event it has held, the medal table, the rare non-Chinese champions, how the United States has done, and what is changing for Los Angeles.
Quick Facts
- Olympic debut: Seoul 1988
- Paralympic debut: Rome 1960 (one of the original eight sports)
- Medal events held (1988–2024): 42
- Golds won by China: 37 of 42 (as of Paris 2024)
- Most Olympic golds: Ma Long (China), 6
- US Olympic medals: None so far
- Next Games: Los Angeles 2028, six events
When Did Table Tennis Become an Olympic Sport?
Getting in took decades. The ITTF first pushed for a place at the 1936 Berlin Games and again for the planned 1940 Tokyo Games, which were cancelled by World War II. After the war, arguments over amateur status and objections inside the sport kept the idea stalled through the 1950s and 1960s, and an application in the 1970s was rejected before the federation reapplied.
The breakthrough came in 1981, when the International Olympic Committee voted to admit table tennis. Seven years later the sport made its debut in Seoul. For the longer backstory, from Victorian parlor game to global sport, see our history of table tennis.
Olympic Table Tennis Events Over Time
The event lineup has been reshuffled three times, and a fourth change is coming in 2028.
| Games | Events | What Changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1988–2004 | 4 | Men's and women's singles and doubles |
| 2008–2016 | 4 | Doubles dropped; men's and women's team events added |
| Tokyo 2020 | 5 | Mixed doubles added |
| Paris 2024 | 5 | Same five events as Tokyo |
| LA 2028 (scheduled) | 6 | Men's and women's doubles return; new mixed team event; men's and women's team events not on the program |
One quirk: at Barcelona 1992, two bronze medals were awarded in each event. For how the pairs game works, see our table tennis doubles rules.
China's Olympic Dominance: The Medal Table
No country has dominated an Olympic sport quite like China dominates this one. Through Paris 2024, China has won 37 of the 42 gold medals ever awarded and has medaled in every event except the very first men's singles in 1988. At Beijing 2008 it swept all three podium places in both the men's and women's singles.
| Rank | Nation | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | China | 37 | 21 | 8 | 66 |
| 2 | South Korea | 3 | 3 | 14 | 20 |
| 3 | Japan | 1 | 4 | 5 | 10 |
| 4 | Sweden | 1 | 3 | 1 | 5 |

The Only Five Golds China Didn't Win
Because China wins so often, the exceptions are some of the most famous moments in the sport's Olympic history.
| Games | Event | Gold Medalist(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul 1988 | Men's singles | Yoo Nam-kyu (South Korea) |
| Seoul 1988 | Women's doubles | Hyun Jung-hwa and Yang Young-ja (South Korea) |
| Barcelona 1992 | Men's singles | Jan-Ove Waldner (Sweden) |
| Athens 2004 | Men's singles | Ryu Seung-min (South Korea) |
| Tokyo 2020 | Mixed doubles | Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito (Japan) |
- Jan-Ove Waldner, 1992: The Swede's Barcelona title remains the only Olympic table tennis gold ever won by a player from outside Asia. Read more in our profile of Jan-Ove Waldner.
- Ryu Seung-min, 2004: South Korea's Ryu won the men's singles in Athens, the last time anyone outside China won an Olympic singles title.
- Mizutani and Ito, 2021: At the Tokyo Games (held in 2021), the Japanese pair won the first-ever Olympic mixed doubles final, beating China's Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen on home soil. The ITTF called it a historic gold.
Paris 2024 Results: China Sweeps All Five
Paris 2024 was held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles from July 27 to August 10, with 175 players from 60 nations. China won every gold, the first clean sweep of the five-event program.
| Event | Gold | Silver | Bronze |
|---|---|---|---|
| Men's singles | Fan Zhendong (CHN) | Truls Möregårdh (SWE) | Félix Lebrun (FRA) |
| Women's singles | Chen Meng (CHN) | Sun Yingsha (CHN) | Hina Hayata (JPN) |
| Mixed doubles | Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha (CHN) | Ri Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong (PRK) | Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin (KOR) |
| Men's team | China | Sweden | France |
| Women's team | China | Japan | South Korea |
The Games had plenty of stories beyond China. Sweden reached both men's finals, and host nation France, led by brothers Félix and Alexis Lebrun, took two bronzes in front of home crowds. Chen Meng defended her Tokyo singles title, and Ma Long added a team gold to reach his record sixth.
How Has the US Olympic Ping Pong Team Done?
The short answer: the United States has never won an Olympic medal in table tennis. Results have been improving, though.
- Wang Chen, Beijing 2008: Reached the women's singles quarterfinals, the best Olympic singles result by an American woman.
- Jimmy Butler, Barcelona 1992: Reached the men's round of 32, a mark no US man matched for more than three decades.
- Kanak Jha, Paris 2024: Became the first American man to reach the Olympic round of 16, where he lost to eventual champion Fan Zhendong. Lily Zhang also reached the women's round of 16 in Paris.
Los Angeles 2028 will be the second home Olympics for US table tennis players, after Atlanta 1996.
How Olympic Table Tennis Works
Rules and Scoring
Olympic matches follow the same ITTF laws of table tennis as any sanctioned match. Games go to 11 points and must be won by two, serves switch every two points (every point from 10–10), and in a deciding game the players change ends when someone reaches five. Our guide to ping pong rules covers the full laws, and our table tennis serve rules page explains what makes a serve legal.
What changes at the Olympics is the format:
| Event | Match Format |
|---|---|
| Singles | Best of seven games, single-elimination draw |
| Mixed doubles | One man and one woman per pair, single-elimination draw |
| Team (2008–2024) | Three players per team; a doubles match first, then up to four singles; first team to win three matches wins |
How Players Qualify
Qualification is run by the ITTF and is limited by strict quotas. At Paris 2024 there were 172 quota places split equally between men and women, and each country could enter up to six players, with no more than two per gender in singles. Places were earned through several routes:
- World Team Championships. The quarterfinalists at the 2024 World Teams Championships qualified for the team events.
- Continental qualifiers. Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania and the Americas each held events awarding team, mixed doubles and singles places.
- World Ranking. Remaining spots went to the highest-ranked eligible teams, pairs and singles players.
- Host and universality places. The host nation received guaranteed entries, and a few spots went to countries with little Olympic representation.
The qualification system for LA 2028 will follow its own published rules, so expect some differences once the new six-event program is in place.
LA 2028: What's Changing
The IOC approved a new mixed team event for Los Angeles in April 2025, and the ITTF has confirmed a six-event program, the largest in Olympic table tennis history:
- Men's singles and women's singles
- Men's doubles and women's doubles (back for the first time since 2004)
- Mixed doubles
- Mixed team (new; teams combine men and women)
The men's and women's team events held from 2008 to 2024 are not part of that program. According to the ITTF, competition will be held at the LA Convention Center Hall 3.
Paralympic Table Tennis
Table tennis has an even longer Paralympic history. It was one of the original eight sports at the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960 and has been on the program ever since. Early Games had as few as three classes per gender; by Rio 2016 there were 11, covering wheelchair, standing and intellectually impaired athletes.
Some athletes have crossed over. Poland's Natalia Partyka became the first Para table tennis player to compete at the Olympics, at Beijing 2008, and Australia's Melissa Tapper was selected for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.
Fun Facts About Table Tennis at the Olympics
- The only event in which China has never won an Olympic medal is the 1988 men's singles, the first one ever held.
- Sweden's Waldner is still the only European to win an Olympic table tennis gold.
- Barcelona 1992 is the only Games where two bronze medals were awarded in each table tennis event.
- Athletes from 108 national Olympic committees have competed in Olympic table tennis.
- Long before it became an Olympic sport, table tennis helped reshape world politics when US and Chinese players met in 1971, an episode known as ping pong diplomacy.
The Bottom Line
Ping pong is very much an Olympic sport, with a history at the Games going back to 1988 and at the Paralympics back to 1960. China has won all but five of the 42 golds awarded so far, the United States is still chasing its first medal, and LA 2028 brings back doubles alongside a brand-new mixed team event.
