What Are the Best Ping Pong Nets?

The best ping pong nets clamp firmly to the table, hold the top of the net at exactly 15.25 cm (6 in), and let you adjust tension so the ball does not bounce off a sagging tape. For most players, the JOOLA WM Professional is the strongest all-round pick: it is ITTF approved, uses a screw clamp and has fine height adjustment. If your net comes on and off every day, a spring clip set like the STIGA Premium Clipper is faster to live with.

The net is the cheapest part of a table setup, yet a loose or low one changes every rally. Serves that should clear the tape clip it, and drives that should be lets suddenly look good. A decent net and post set fixes that for good.

Below are nine options that are currently sold: tournament-style screw clamp sets, quick spring clip sets, outdoor nets and a replacement net. After the picks, you will find the official net rules, how to set height and tension, and how to tell whether a set will fit your table.

Quick Answer: Choose a screw clamp set if the net stays on the table. Choose a spring clip if you remove it often. Either way, check the maximum table thickness before you order.

Net and Post Sets Compared

The main differences are the clamp, the table thickness each set accepts, how tension and height are adjusted, and what the posts and net are made of. Specs below come from the manufacturers or authorized retailers. Where a maker does not publish a figure, it is left out rather than guessed.

The 9 Best Ping Pong Nets for Every Table

The first two picks are tournament-style screw clamp sets. Next come spring clip sets for home tables, then outdoor nets, and finally a replacement net for when your posts are still fine.

1. JOOLA WM Professional Net and Post Set

The WM is JOOLA's competition net, and it is the one to buy if you want a home or club table to play like a tournament table. It is ITTF approved and complies with the European EN 14468-2 A standard, its A class for net assemblies.

The posts are solid metal and the netting is double-woven cotton-steel thread, which holds its shape under daily use. A micro-vertical adjustment lets you set the exact height, and a net height ruler is included. Rubber-padded clasps tighten onto the table edge without marking it.

The only real trade-off is speed. Screw clamps take a minute to fit, so this set is best on a table where the net stays in place.

2. Butterfly Europa II Net Set

Butterfly's Europa II is the alternative for players who care most about fine-tuning. It separates the two adjustments that matter: screws calibrate the height, while a ring chain sets the tension. A pull-string with hook-on beads holds the net to the posts, and a gauge is included.

The clamps are felt tipped, which is kinder to a painted table edge than bare metal. They fit tables up to 1.5 in thick, which covers nearly all indoor tables. Retailers list the set as ITTF approved.

3. STIGA Premium Clipper Net and Post Set

The Premium Clipper is one of the best-known spring clip nets for home tables. You squeeze the spring-activated clip, slide it onto the table and let go. That makes it ideal for tables that fold up or double as a dining surface.

It has heavy-duty steel posts, a cotton-blend net and a pull-string tension system, and it is USATT approved. The key limit is fit: STIGA lists a maximum table thickness of 1 in, so measure the edge before buying.

Best Spring Clip

Best for: Home tables where the net comes off often

STIGA's Premium Clipper is a 72 in spring-clip set with steel posts, a cotton-blend net and pull-string tension. It is USATT approved and fits regulation tables up to 1 in thick, so check your table top before ordering.

4. JOOLA Premium Inside Net and Post Set

If you like the idea of a spring clip but your table is thicker than 1 in, the Premium Inside is the better match. It clips on like the STIGA but accepts tables up to 1.5 in thick.

Height and tension are both adjustable, with tension set by a pull-string and hook-on beads. It is sized for standard 9 x 5 ft tables and comes in black.

Best for Thicker Home Tables

JOOLA Premium Inside Net and Post Set

Best for: Home tables up to 1.5 in that need a clip-on net

The JOOLA Premium Inside is a 72 in spring-clamp set that fits tables up to 1.5 in thick, which covers more home tables than the STIGA Clipper. Height and tension are both adjustable.

  • Fits standard 9 x 5 ft tables

Cons

  • Net material is not published
  • Spring clamps hold less firmly than screw clamps over time

5. JOOLA Snapper Net and Post Set

The Snapper is built for speed. Its spring-activated clamp lets you put it on or take it off in seconds, and the compact metal posts have built-in vertical adjustment for height.

It meets EN 14468-2 C, the recreational class of the European standard. That makes it a sensible choice for schools, offices and family rooms where several people set up the table. Competitive players should choose an ITTF-approved set instead.

Quickest Setup

JOOLA Snapper Net and Post Set

The Snapper is JOOLA's compact spring-clamp set. It attaches in seconds, has vertical height adjustment and meets EN 14468-2 C, the recreational class of the European net standard.

6. Killerspin Apex Net and Post Set

The Apex brings screw clamp stability to the mid-range. Steel posts tighten by hand onto rubber pads, a ring chain keeps the cotton net firm, and each post has its own height adjustment. A net gauge is in the box.

Note that Killerspin lists the net at 70 in rather than 72 in. Killerspin's own store lists the set as call for availability, so buy from a listing that shows stock.

Killerspin's Apex uses steel posts with hand-tightened screw pads, a 70 in cotton net and a ring chain for tension. A gauge is included and each post has its own height adjustment.

7. JOOLA WX Aluminum Indoor/Outdoor Net Set

The WX Aluminum is the pick for covered patios, garages and other semi-outdoor spaces. Aluminum posts are lighter than steel and suit indoor and outdoor use, while the reinforced cotton netting gives a crisp feel.

It uses rubber-padded screw clamps, fits tables up to 1.5 in thick, and adjusts for both height and tension. Cotton netting should still come inside after play.

Best Indoor/Outdoor

JOOLA WX Aluminum Indoor/Outdoor Net Set

Best for: Covered patios and garages

The WX Aluminum swaps steel for light aluminum posts and adds reinforced cotton netting, adjustable height and pull-string tension. It fits tables up to 1.5 in thick.

Pros

  • Light aluminum posts suit indoor and outdoor use
  • Adjustable height and tension
  • Screw clamp holds steady

Cons

  • Cotton netting still needs to come inside after play
  • 1.5 in limit rules out some thick outdoor tops

8. JOOLA Outdoor Weatherproof Net and Post Set

For a table that lives outside, this JOOLA set is designed to stay out. The posts are hard plastic, so there is nothing to rust, and the net is weatherized.

A screw mechanism with a padded locking plate holds it in place, and one dial adjusts both tension and height. It is made for tops at least 1/2 in thick. For more outdoor setups, see our guide to the best outdoor ping pong tables.

9. Kettler Indoor/Outdoor Nylon Replacement Net

Sometimes only the net is broken. If you own a Kettler table and the posts still work, this nylon mesh net slides straight into them. It is 70 in long, works indoors and outdoors, and carries a 1-year residential warranty.

Posts are not included, and it does not have tension adjuster tabs, so it is strictly a repair part for Kettler tables.

Best Replacement Net

Kettler Indoor/Outdoor Nylon Replacement Net

Best for: Kettler table owners whose posts are still fine

This is a net-only replacement for Kettler tables. The 70 in nylon mesh slides into your existing posts, which makes it the simplest fix when the net is torn but the posts still work.

Official Net Rules: Height, Length and Posts

The net is part of the table rules in the ITTF Laws of Table Tennis. Law 2.2 calls it the net assembly: the net, its suspension cord, the posts and the clamps that attach them to the table.

Quick Facts

  • Net height: 15.25 cm (6 in) above the playing surface along its whole length
  • Post height: 15.25 cm
  • Post position: outside edge 15.25 cm beyond each side line
  • Net length: about 183 cm (6 ft): a 152.5 cm table plus 15.25 cm on each side
  • Bottom of the net: as close as possible to the playing surface

The ends of the net must be attached to the posts from top to bottom, so there should be no gap at the sides. Many home and outdoor sets use a 5 ft or 70 in net, so they are shorter than regulation. They are fine for casual play but are not built to the rule.

For the rest of the table measurements, see ping pong table dimensions. For how the net affects scoring, see our ping pong rules guide.

Did You Know? A serve that touches the net assembly and is otherwise good is a let and is replayed (Law 2.9.1.1). In a rally, a return that clips the net and lands on the far side is a legal shot. Our guide to table tennis serve rules covers net lets in detail.

Screw Clamp vs Spring Clip vs Retractable

Every net and post set falls into one of three designs. Pick the one that fits how often your net comes off.

TypeHow It AttachesBest ForTrade-Off
Screw clampHand-tightened screw with a padClub and home tables where the net stays onSlower to fit and remove
Spring clipSpring-loaded jaw grips the table edgeFolding tables and shared roomsGrip can weaken as the spring wears
RetractablePull-out net between two clampsKitchen, desk or travel play on any tableNot regulation length or tension

Screw clamps are the most common type and the most stable. Spring clips trade a little firmness for speed. Retractable nets stretch to fit almost any surface. JOOLA's retractable set, for example, extends up to 6.25 ft and fits tables up to 1.75 in thick. They are covered in our guide to the best portable ping pong sets.

How to Set Net Height and Tension

Most nets ship close to the right height, but they drift as the cord stretches. Check yours whenever play feels off.

  1. Clamp the posts centered. Line each post up with the center line and tighten until it does not wobble. Do not over-tighten on a thin or painted edge.
  2. Check both posts. Use the gauge or a ruler to confirm the top of each post sits at 15.25 cm.
  3. Tighten the cord. Pull the tension string or turn the dial until the top tape is straight across the table.
  4. Measure the middle. The center is where a net sags. It must also read 15.25 cm.
  5. Test the tension. DONIC's ITTF-approved gauge is a 100 g weight that is 1 cm shorter than net height. Hang it from the middle of the net: when the tension is right, it almost touches the table.
Tip: Bring cotton nets indoors and release some tension between sessions if the table sits unused for weeks. It reduces stretching.

Will It Fit Your Table?

Table thickness is the most common reason a net does not fit. Clamps have a fixed opening, and the picks above range from 1 in (STIGA Premium Clipper) to 1.5 in (JOOLA Premium Inside, Butterfly Europa II, JOOLA WX Aluminum).

  • Measure the edge, not the center. Some tables have a thicker apron or frame under the edge.
  • Check for obstructions. Metal frames or folding hinges near the center line can block the clamp jaw.
  • Outdoor tops vary. Some outdoor tables are thin and need a set rated for thin tops, while others use built-in nets.

If you are still choosing a table, our best ping pong tables guide lists what each one includes.

Replacing a Broken Ping Pong Net

Most broken nets fall into one of two cases.

  • Torn net, posts fine: buy a replacement net that matches your posts, like the Kettler nylon net for Kettler tables. Brand-specific nets slide into their own posts.
  • Bent post, worn spring or stripped clamp: replace the whole set. A universal net and post set is usually the faster fix than tracking down parts.

If you own a Sportcraft table, our Sportcraft ping pong tables page covers the brand and its replacement nets. Before ordering, note your table thickness and whether the old net clipped or screwed on.

Outdoor Nets: What Changes

Outdoor nets face rain, sun and damp air. Look for posts that will not rust (plastic or aluminum), a net made of nylon or weatherized fabric, and a padded clamp that will not scratch a coated top.

The JOOLA Outdoor Weatherproof set is built to live outside. The WX Aluminum is better under cover. Whatever you choose, store the net indoors when you can. It will last far longer than a net left out through a winter.

Which Net Should You Buy?

For a tournament-standard setup, choose the JOOLA WM Professional or Butterfly Europa II. For quick on-and-off use at home, pick the STIGA Premium Clipper for thin tables or the JOOLA Premium Inside for tables up to 1.5 in. Outside, go with the JOOLA Outdoor Weatherproof set. If only the net is torn, a replacement net is the simplest fix.

Once the net is set, the rest of your gear matters just as much. See our picks for the best ping pong paddles and best table tennis balls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How High Is a Ping Pong Net?

The top of the net must be 15.25 cm (6 in) above the playing surface along its whole length, and the posts are also 15.25 cm high. Measure at both posts and in the middle.

How Long Is a Regulation Ping Pong Net?

A regulation net is about 183 cm (6 ft) long. The table is 152.5 cm wide and each post sits 15.25 cm outside the side line, which adds up to 183 cm.

Will Any Ping Pong Net Fit My Table?

Most clamp sets fit standard tables, but each has a maximum table thickness, often 1 in or 1.5 in. Measure your table top edge first, and choose a retractable net for non-standard tables.

Is It a Let if the Serve Hits the Net?

Yes. Under ITTF Law 2.9.1.1, a serve that touches the net assembly is a let if it is otherwise correct, and it is replayed. During a rally, a ball that clips the net and lands on the far side stays in play.

Can I Leave a Ping Pong Net Outside?

Only if it is built for it. Weatherproof sets use plastic or aluminum posts and weatherized or nylon nets, but storing any net indoors when not in use extends its life.

Screw Clamp or Spring Clip: Which Is Better?

Screw clamps hold more firmly and are used on tournament nets. Spring clips are faster to put on and take off, which suits home tables where the net comes off often.
