Tenergy 05 Review: The Short Version

Butterfly Tenergy 05 is still one of the best rubbers you can put on an attacking paddle, but only if you already loop with good technique. Butterfly rates it 83 for speed, 76 for spin and 79 for arc, a combination that sends topspin over the net on a high, safe curve. Beginners will find it too lively, and players who want maximum spin now have Dignics as an upgrade.

Tenergy launched in 2008, and the 05 became the model that defined the whole family. This review covers the ratings, the sponge choices, how the 05-FX and 05 Hard differ, how it stacks up against Tenergy 64, 80 and Dignics, and which Tenergy 05 alternatives make sense when the price is too steep.

Quick Facts

  • Maker: Butterfly (made in Japan)
  • Series launch: 2008
  • Type: High Tension pimples-in (inverted) rubber
  • Sponge: Spring Sponge, hardness 36 on Butterfly's scale
  • Thicknesses: 1.7, 1.9 and 2.1 mm
  • Colors: Red and black
  • Butterfly index: Speed 83, Spin 76, Arc 79

What Makes Tenergy 05 Different

Tenergy 05 combines three things Butterfly developed separately: a High Tension top sheet, the elastic Spring Sponge, and the No. 05 pimple pattern under the surface. Butterfly says the pattern is "excellent for imparting spin on the ball" and that the rubber supports "a full range of topspin play."

High Tension means the rubber is built with internal tension, so it stores and releases energy on contact. That gives a catapult effect without any extra help from the player. When Tenergy arrived, it was promoted as a way to get a speed-glue-like feel at a time when the sport was moving away from speed glue, as Greg's Table Tennis Pages notes in its original review. If you want the background on tensors versus tacky Chinese rubbers, see our guide to table tennis rubber types.

Did You Know? Butterfly lists players such as Fabien Lamirault, Suthasini Sawettabut, Diya Chitale and Thomas Schmidberger among Tenergy 05 users.

Butterfly's Speed, Spin and Arc Ratings

Butterfly publishes three numbers for each rubber: speed, spin and arc (the height of the ball's trajectory). They are Butterfly's own performance index, revised in February 2023 to reflect improved measurement methods, and they only compare fairly with other Butterfly rubbers. Tibhar, Donic or DHS figures use different scales.

Tenergy 05 Performance Index (Butterfly published specs)
Speed83
Spin76
Arc79

The 79 arc rating is the headline. A high arc lets loops clear the net with margin and dip onto the table, which is why the rubber feels safe for topspin play. The flip side is that players who prefer flat, penetrating drives may find it a little loopy.

Sponge Thickness and Hardness

The standard version uses a 36 sponge on Butterfly's scale. Hardness scales differ between brands, so a "36" Butterfly sponge is not directly comparable with a European "47.5°" figure. Within Butterfly's range, 36 is the regular Tenergy hardness; the FX versions drop to 32 and 05 Hard rises to 43.

ThicknessTypical EffectCommon Use
2.1 mmMost speed, most weightForehand for strong attackers
1.9 mmSlightly more control, lighterBackhand, or forehand for club players
1.7 mmMost control, lightestControl-minded players and choppers

On weight, Racket Insight measured a cut 2.1 mm sheet at 49 g. Weight varies with thickness, sheet and blade size, so treat this as a single reference point.

The Tenergy Family: 05 vs 05-FX, 05 Hard, 64, 80, 19 and 25

Butterfly's current range lists ten Tenergy models. The number refers to the pimple design; "FX" means a softer 32 sponge, and "Hard" means a firmer 43 sponge. Here is how the regular versions and the 05 variants compare on Butterfly's index.

05-FX: Softer and More Forgiving

The FX keeps the 05 pimples but uses a softer sponge, which Butterfly says gives more control on heavy topspin strokes. It also comes in 1.7, 1.9 and 2.1 mm. It suits players with slower swings, or anyone who finds the standard version hard to engage.

05 Hard: For Strong Strokes

The Hard version uses a 43 sponge and is sold only in 1.9 and 2.1 mm. Butterfly's index rates it far higher for spin (96) and arc (92) than the standard sheet, but a harder sponge needs more swing speed to reach that potential. Butterfly's European site describes it as aimed at ambitious players with clean technique who accept a heavier sheet.

vs 64 and 80

Tenergy 64 is the speed choice: 87 on Butterfly's index with a flatter 75 arc, good for drives and mid-distance topspin. Tenergy 80 sits between the two. If your game is built on spinny opening loops, 05 is the natural pick; if you hit through the ball, 64 or 80 may feel more direct.

Tenergy 05 vs Dignics 05 and 09C

Dignics is Butterfly's newer premium line built on Spring Sponge X, and it is the main reason some players have moved on from Tenergy. The comparison below uses Butterfly's own numbers.

Spin Rating: Tenergy 05 vs Dignics (Butterfly published specs)
Tenergy 0576

Dignics 09C96
RubberSpeed / Spin / ArcSpongeThicknesses
Tenergy 0583 / 76 / 79Spring Sponge, 361.7, 1.9, 2.1 mm

Dignics 09C79 / 96 / 96Spring Sponge X, 441.9, 2.1 mm

Dignics 05 is the closest successor: same pimple code, a harder sponge and a durable top sheet that Butterfly says gives a firm feel at impact. Dignics 09C is a different animal, with a tacky surface that trades a little speed for much more spin. Both cost more and both demand stronger technique. For many club players, the softer Tenergy 05 is easier to use well.

Who Should Use Tenergy 05?

Good Fit

  • Intermediate to advanced players who loop from both wings
  • Attackers who like a high, safe arc on topspin
  • Players moving up from Rozena or a budget tensor
  • Backhand use for players with Dignics or a harder rubber on the forehand

Poor Fit

  • Beginners still learning basic strokes
  • Players who want flat, low drives (consider 64)
  • Defensive choppers who need maximum control
  • Anyone on a tight budget

Pairing matters too. Tenergy 05 is often fitted to fast blades such as the Butterfly Viscaria and Timo Boll ALC, and that combination is very fast. Players with less experience may prefer a slower all-wood blade or a 1.9 mm sheet.

Lifespan, Gluing and Care

No manufacturer gives a fixed lifespan for Tenergy 05, and wear depends on how often and how hard you play. Signs that it is time to replace the sheet include a top sheet that has lost its grip, visible surface damage, or chipped edges.

  1. Glue with a water-based glue. Modern rubbers are fixed with water-based glue or glue sheets; our table tennis glue guide explains the options.
  2. Cover it after play. Greg's review describes the surface as delicate and recommends a protective film; Butterfly gives similar advice for its Dignics surfaces.
  3. Clean gently. Use a rubber cleaner and a soft sponge rather than water and rough cloths.
  4. Store it in a case. Keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.

Cheaper Alternatives to Tenergy 05

If the premium price is the obstacle, there are good options. Butterfly Rozena shares Tenergy 05's 83 speed rating with a slightly softer 35 sponge, and Butterfly describes it as more tolerant of small errors. Tibhar Evolution MX-P is a long-standing European rival at a lower price tier. Our full Tenergy 05 alternatives guide covers more, and the best table tennis rubber roundup ranks options for every level.

Verdict: Is Tenergy 05 Still Worth It?

For a capable looper, yes. Tenergy 05 offers a well-proven mix of speed, spin and a forgiving high arc, three thickness options, and softer and harder versions on the same pimple design. It is no longer Butterfly's spinniest rubber, since Dignics and even 05 Hard rate higher on Butterfly's index, but it is easier to control than those harder sheets. Beginners and budget buyers should look at Rozena or a control rubber first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tenergy 05 Good for Beginners?

Usually not. Its speed and high arc reward players who already loop consistently, and the extra liveliness makes basic strokes harder to groove. Beginners learn faster with a control rubber such as Butterfly Sriver or Yasaka Mark V.

What Is the Difference Between Tenergy 05, 05-FX and 05 Hard?

All three use the No. 05 pimple pattern. The standard version has a 36 sponge, 05-FX a softer 32 sponge (Butterfly index 81 speed, 64 spin), and 05 Hard a 43 sponge with Butterfly's spin rating of 96 and arc of 92.

Is Tenergy 05 Better Than Tenergy 64?

Neither is better overall. On Butterfly's index Tenergy 64 is faster (87 vs 83) with a flatter arc (75 vs 79), while 05 has slightly more spin (76 vs 70). Choose 05 for topspin looping and 64 for speed and flatter drives.

Should I Buy Tenergy 05 or Dignics 05?

Dignics 05 is the newer, harder model (40 sponge, Spring Sponge X) and Butterfly rates it higher for speed, spin and arc. Tenergy 05 is softer and sits in a lower price tier, so it is the easier choice for strong club players.

How Long Does Tenergy 05 Last?

There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on how often and how hard you play and how you store it. Replace it when the top sheet loses grip or the edges are damaged, and cover it with a protective film after each session to slow wear.

Which Thickness of Tenergy 05 Should I Choose?

Butterfly sells 1.7, 1.9 and 2.1 mm. Thicker sponge adds speed and weight; thinner sponge adds control. Many attackers use 2.1 mm on the forehand and 1.9 mm on the backhand.
